A perfect day at the Elaphiti Islands, Dubrovnik

While visiting the magnificent Dubrovnik this summer, we were lucky enough to experience one of the best day trips I had in a long time. The old town of Dubrovnik has a lot to offer, but if you are in a need for some crystal clear sea, taking a swim in some of the most beautiful places, and having a delicious lunch next to the sea – this is a day trip you should definitely do. There are many agencies offering a whole day excursions to Elaphiti Islands from Dubrovnik, but as we wanted to have the flexibility and to see some of the hidden gems, we decided to organise the day by our own preferences. This individual way of island hopping is a bit more pricey, but if you are in a group of five or six people, I can assure you it is worth it.

We departed from Radisson Blu resort in Orasac, just a 15 min drive from the Old town of Dubrovnik. Every part of this trip was picture perfect.

After a 20 min boat ride, our first swimming stop was a magical sea cave on the west part of the island of Koločep where, if you are brave enough, you can swim into the cave. The experience is definitely special and unique.

Šipan

We continued our trip to the largest island of the famous Dubrovnik Elaphiti archipelago –Šipan. We took a walk around the small town Sudurad which is located on the eastern part of the island, where you can see many old structures like old summer residences of the landowners.

Koločep

After a walk and a coffee break in Sudurad, we continued to the island of Koločep, where we took a nice 45 minute walk across the island. Koločep is known as a green island because of its centuries’ old woods of pine, olive groves and many gardens filled with oranges and lemons.

On the walking path across the island you can see a nice harbor, a beautiful walking path, many hidden lagoons, old town and get the feeling of the local way of living, eg the figs being dried out in the sun in the gardens, locals selling the homemade olive oil, etc.

Bowa

After all that swimming and walking, we got pretty hungry so we headed to our boat, and we took a ride back to the island of Sipan, to this beautiful restaurant Bowa on an incredible out of this world location. This seafood restaurant is accessible only by a boat, and whole concept of the restaurant is about relaxing, enjoying an amazing little private beach, eating fresh seafood, without a worry in the world.

We had an amazing lunch – for the starter we all shared a couple of dishes as orzotto with cuttlefish and limpet, octopus and broad bean salad, ravioli with spinach, cottage cheese and caviar, black pasta with shrimp and broad beans… and for the main course we had a big plate of delicious fresh tuna steak, sea bass fillet and Adriatic calamari, with some potato salad and grilled vegetables. And of course, we had some divine Croatian white wine to go with it.

Delicious lunch in Bowa

Bowa is definitely a perfect place to stop for a lunch while doing the Elaphiti island tour, as you can eat good, chill on the beach or in the private lounge, and enjoy the crystal clear sea for swimming.

All in all, it was a perfect day filled with many breathtaking sceneries, beautiful walks, out of this world swimming places and delicious food.
